Donations from our users and private donors help keep KoboToolbox accessible to everyone, so we can continue to provide reliable, secure, and high quality data tools to users around the world—especially organizations in low-income countries.
Revenue
Kobo depends on partnerships and service agreements as a main source of revenue.
We work directly with organizations worldwide to find solutions to their data collection needs, including setting up organization-specific servers, professional user support, training sessions, and feature development. Through our collaboration with partner organizations, new features are added to the public KoboToolbox platform every year, helping to meet the needs of organizations working in the field.
In 2024, 38% of Kobo’s operating revenue came from grants and other contributions totaling $1,082,000. The remaining 62% came from program service revenue—including service contracts, subscription fees, and other income—totaling $1,781,784 .
Expenses
91% directly toward KoboToolbox and advancing our mission.
In 2024, 91% of Kobo’s operating expenses were dedicated to program services—meaning ninety-one cents of every dollar went directly toward the development and maintenance of KoboToolbox and advancing Kobo’s mission. The remaining 9% supported management and administration, ensuring effective oversight and accountability.

In 2024, 74% of Kobo’s total expenses were related to staff and contractor compensation. The remaining 26% were distributed as follows: server hosting (17%), professional services (6%), and office, miscellaneous, and other administrative expenses (3%)
